Adjusting your plan, illness & holidays

Why doesn't Trait automatically rewrite my plan when I train differently than planned?

Trait advises you but doesn't decide for you: after every workout and regularly in the background, Trait checks whether your plan still fits and makes suggestions. You steer your plan yourself every day via the Readiness Score and the alternatives. Completely rewriting the plan after every deviation would make it worthless.

“The plan doesn't adapt” is one of the most common misunderstandings we hear. So here's a detailed explanation of how Trait really works – and why that's intentional.

You're at the wheel

Trait advises you but doesn't decide for you. In many places, Trait suggests changes – whether you accept them is up to you. What Trait deliberately does not do: rewrite the plan on its own after every workout, every deviation or every extra activity.

Why not?

In practice, every athlete does their own thing – with a human coach, and even more so with an app. Sessions get moved, shortened, extended, run faster or slower, or shifted into a completely different rhythm. That's perfectly legitimate, and the motto is: what matters is that you train and stay on track.

If Trait rewrote the plan after each of these deviations, it would end up merely mirroring what you're doing anyway – as if you had no plan at all. Your goal would get lost along the way. But Trait wants to take responsibility for your goal, your marathon for example. For that, the plan needs to contain something Trait can stand behind: a plan that would have worked if you had run it as written.

How Trait actually adapts

  1. Paces as suggestions. After every checkout (your perceived effort from 0 to 10) and roughly once a month via a heart rate analysis, Trait checks whether your paces still fit. If they're off, Trait suggests raising or lowering them. You accept or decline the suggestion. As a Free user, you can see that this analysis is happening; applying the suggestion is a Pro feature.
  2. Readiness Score as daily control. Trait also takes extra strain into account – say, yesterday's tennis match that you gave a subjective rating – and lowers your Readiness Score on its own. If you feel worse than Trait assumes, simply drag the score down yourself. This tells Trait: “I'm not where I should be today according to the plan.” Then tap today's session and choose Alternatives. Trait suggests alternatives that match your Readiness Score – from an easier session to a full rest day. You can still run the session as planned, though. This way you fine-tune your plan practically every day without losing sight of your goal. More on this: What is the Readiness Score? and I don't feel fit today – what do I do with the planned workout?
  3. Illness and injury. This also works via the Readiness Score: drag it down to 0%, choose “I'm sick” or “I'm injured”, pause the plan and come back later with or without a return-to-training phase. Explained step by step in Sick or injured: pausing the plan and getting back into it.
  4. Training mode. With Light, Base and All-In, you set at the push of a button how much training load fits into your life right now – for example, train “light” during a packed work week and switch back afterwards. See Light, Base, All-In.

What “daily, automatic adjustment” means

If you've read this term on our site, this is exactly what it means: Trait checks after every workout and regularly in the background whether the plan still fits, and suggests adjustments. You can readjust daily via the Readiness Score and the alternatives. But Trait doesn't rewrite the plan on its own.

Special case: plan with a fixed target time

If you chose a fixed target time when creating your plan (e.g. “marathon in 4:00 h”), your plan is largely static: the target time determines which sessions and paces have to be run at which point, and the dynamic pace suggestions are switched off. The training mode isn't available there either. If you want flexibility with your training load, you need a plan in individual training – and accept that the achievable time stays open.

In short

Trait doesn't write you a text after every run and doesn't rebuild your plan behind your back. Instead, you get suggestions you can accept, and tools to adapt the plan yourself, day by day, to your form and your everyday life. The plan remains what it's meant to be: the path to your goal.
