Getting started & training plan

Which distances can I choose as a goal – and can I do a trail or ultra race?

You can choose 5 km, 10 km, half marathon, marathon or a custom distance from 7 to 80 km. Trail and ultra races are possible up to 80 km; for longer races we recommend using the plan for the maximum distance as a guide.

When you create a manual event, you can choose between 5 km, 10 km, half marathon, marathon or a custom distance. You set the custom distance using a scroll wheel – from 7 km to 80 km.

So 5 km and anything between 7 and 80 km is possible. Not possible are distances under 5 km (e.g. 3 km) and 6 km.

Trail and ultra

You can plan trail and ultra distances within this upper limit of 80 km. Why is there a limit?

  • Trait prescribes time, not distance. From a certain distance onwards (60, 70, 80 or 100 km), the rule in training is the same anyway: run as many hours as anyone can reasonably be expected to per week. There's no further gradation beyond that.
  • We could remove the limit – but we'd then hand out the same maximum plan for every longer distance. That would be window dressing: no app can seriously prepare anyone for 100 km. Even 80 km is borderline.
  • Anyone who wants to run even further is usually so experienced that they do their own training or already run as much as they can anyway.

Our tip for longer races: Create a plan for the maximum distance (~80 km) and use it as a guide – without expecting it to prepare you precisely for 100 km or more.

Elevation gain and terrain aren't factored into the planning separately for trail races; the plan is based on distance and time frame. We're happy to take requests in this direction on board.
